Computer Classes
Students attend Computer Class with their homeroom as part of their Special Area rotation weekly for approximately 50 minutes.
All students are taught Computer Basics:

Kindergarten & First Grade
Students are introduced to the keyboard using appropriate software and instruction. Kindergarten learns the keyboard with Kid Keys while 1st Graders begin learning the home position on the home row and proper finger placement using the lessons in Dance Mat Typing and other various typing programs to reinforce learning the home position.
2nd & 3rd Grade
Students continue with keyboarding activities to reinforce the home position and gradually advance in lessons per individual skill level. Students are introduced to Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and have opportunities to apply their keyboarding skills through a variety of assignments i.e. Google Earth, Creative Writing, Wordels, Spirit Buttons, Flyers, and Slideshows. At this age, we begin to focus on internet basics and learning how to research. Techniques for researching are introduced and throughout these grades students participate in activities that will facilitate their developing skill for use with academic projects. In Computer Class, we use Microsoft Encarta Kids and an online subscription to Brainpop Jr. During the 2nd Semester, 3rd Graders compete in the Cyber Olympics which challenges them to use all of the technical skills that they have learned!
How can you help your student succeed?
Today, incoming Kindergarten Students are not as familiar with using a mouse with a computer since they are more exposed to a touch-screen environment. If you don't already have a mouse, you may want to invest in a laptop sized mouse and help your future kindergartner practice.
Practice KEYBOARDING at home! Keyboarding is the ultimate foundation that students need to succeed in Computer Class and in the real world! As keyboarding is a cumulative skill, it is vital that students learn to use the correct fingers when typing and to learn the home position. Keyboarding helps students to communicate more efficiently. It facilitates skill development in writing, spelling, grammar, reading, vocabulary and research. Take advantage of some online programs that teach keyboarding like Dance Mat Typing....it's free!
